November 30th, was my little sister Raichatou's 15th birthday--and so of course we had to celebrate. While celebrating birthdays is not a typical custom among the Tuaregs as most of them don't even know their exact birthdays, I think there's something special about setting aside a day once a year to celebrate someone you love--a day to say I'm glad you're part of my life. Therefore, I've taken to celebrating my African family's birthdays with them. Other than bringing a small gift and a tasty cake, this evening wasn't anything too out of the norm, but I think Raichatou knew that she was special and loved!
a delicious birthday supper of rice and sauce
birthday cake--with candles even!
mmmm...chocolate (banana bread--gotta sneak in some nutrients somehow!)
make a wish!
I've taught her well!
